Assignments 0-4: Introduction, Uniformly Accelerated Motion
Preliminary Assignment (orientation and assessment)
Distance Students: BE SURE YOU HAVE CONTACTED YOUR INSTRUCTOR BY EMAIL. You will receive instructions for accessing the necessary Blackboard sessions, and for then completing other preliminary tasks including downloads from the Supervised Study page and the q_a_orientation program.
This preliminary assignment will orient you to the course and give you your first exposure to the subject matter of this course and to the communication process. This assignment will typically require a week's work, though many students will be able to complete it more quickly while some might require a little longer. Due to the variable times required to complete the preliminary assignment, each student may choose to work with a one- or two-week delay from the posted Due Dates.
Distance Students: Run the q_a_orientation program, all seven sections, and email the associated Send files to the instructor according to the instructions given in that program.
Distance Students: Run the program q_a_initial_pbs.exe. Do the Physics initial problems, the Typewriter Notation Problems and the Describing Graphs problems and send the SEND file to the instructor. These three assignments may be done on different days and can therefore be sent in different SEND files. If you have not done this, do so now; however wait until your day's work is done and send all SEND files at the end of the day.
Distance Students: Complete the program q_a_int_pbs_communication.exe and email the instructor the appropriate SEND file at the end of your day.
Distance Students: Complete the q_a_rates.exe program.
DISTANCE STUDENTS: NOTE VIDEO VERSIONS OF CLASS NOTES ON CD's, Starting with CD #2. See CD Contents for table of contents.
Read instructions for Unpacking your Initial Lab Materials, which are packaged with your first set of CDs. Read also Common Items not supplied with Lab Materials.
Assignment 0
Be sure you have completed the Preliminary Assignment above.
See Class Notes #01-#03. Class notes start on CD #2.
See Physics I First Assignments for more details and clarification on the Week 1 assignments.
See Which Assignments Do I Need To Complete? to clarify which assignments are necessary for your specific course.
Introductory Questions. You might want to revisit these questions regularly throughout the course so you can see how your understanding has changed during the term.
Perform Mini-Experiment 1, Rolling an Object Down and Incline under Mini-Experiments and submit your results as instructed in the red letters just under the heading of that page.
Run the program q_a_pend_exp.exe or q_a_pend_exp_121_version.exe, which you should have downloaded from the Supervised Study Current Semester pages. Phy 121 students should run the 121 version; other students may run this version before running the other since all of the data and results from the 121 version will be applicable to the other version.
The pendulum experiment uses one of the washers you received with your CD and a length of thread (which you should have; very light string is also OK) to construct and make observations on a pendulum, and to then analyze your results into a mathematical model. You also need a ruler. If you don't have one then click on Rulers and print out the page, which should give you a reasonably accurate ruler (about six of them, in fact). This model will allow you to use a pendulum as a timing device in certain experiments.
General College Physics Students and University Physics Students: Read Chapter 1 of your Text
General and University Physics students who wish to get started on the text may get a head start by working on the Chapter 1 problems from Assignments #02 - #07. This is purely optional at this time.
When you have completed the entire assignment run the Query program, which you should have downloaded into your c:\vhmthphy folder and which you should have used briefly in your Orientation.

Assignment 1
Read the instructions for submitting experiments just under the main heading in Video Versions Introductory Motion Experiments. Then using the CD #0 disk for the video files perform in the same document Video Version Experiment 2, Average Velocity vs. Slope and Rate of Change of Velocity, Video Version. If you don't have a ruler you can print out reasonably accurate copies of rulers by clicking on Rulers.
Perform Mini-Experiment 2, Using a Calibrated Rubber Band, under Mini-Experiments and submit your results as instructed in bold red letters just under the heading of that page.
View Physics Video Clips 01-03 on the Gen1 CD (note that the root folder of that CD is pretty cluttered; the file you are looking for is entitled disk_1.htm, which might simply show up as disk_1; when the file appears in your browser click on the Physics Video Clips link). Send your answers to the questions posed on the disk_1 file. Copy and paste the questions from your browser into your word processor and insert your answers.
Introductory Problem Sets, Set 1, #'s 1-7
Solve each problem in this set before you look at the solution. Be sure you understand every solution, including all the reasoning and not just the shortest way to get a right answer. Reasoning is essential because everything in this course builds on things you have learned before, and because it is much easier to proceed by reasoning from a few principles than by trying to remember large number of unconnected and complicated details.
Distance Students: View and take notes on related material for Introductory Problem Sets 1 and 2 on CD #0, and also on Introduction to Rates, Graphs, Linearization on the same CD. Physics 121 students need not master the material on linearization.
When you have completed the entire assignment run the Query program for Assignment 1.
Assignment 2
q_a_assts_1_8 exercise: Do Assignment 2 on velocity and submit the corresponding Send file.
Typewriter Notation:
Distance Students: As you have been instructed, you should have run the program q_a_initial_pbs.exe, which you were instructed to download from The Supervised Study page into your c:\vhmthphy folder. You should have been instructed to do the Typewriter Notation problems and send the SEND file to the instructor. If you have not done this, do so now.
In-class students: You will be instructed regarding the Typewriter Notation assignment.
Randomized Problems: Assignment 2, Problem 1. Randomly choose a version of the problem , solve it and submit it. (There are 40 versions for Problem 1, 9 versions for Problem 2). Submit your solution directly by email.
Introductory Problem Sets, Set 2, #'s 1-3. See also Uniformly Accelerated Motion on CD #0.
Do Mini-Experiment 3 on Drawing Your Own Calibration Graph under Mini-Experiments and submit your results as instructed in bold red letters just under the heading of that page.
